The ‘On Departure’ short film, by animator Eoin Duffy, at first seems like a whimsical journey of a little spaceman. We quickly realize it’s actually a beautiful yet emotional tale of a man traveling in an airport, who arrives at heartbreak. The animation is captivatingly haunting, which is helped in part by the melancholy soundtrack that accompanies it. Sad and inspiring it remains with you.
Eoin Duffy brilliantly designs the mechanisms of everyday items in an airport like elevators, escalators, train shuttles and bathroom sinks, utilizing geometric shapes, yet it’s hard to escape the level of such detail it conveys. Especially, when the journey through the airport has reached it’s end, the despair and sadness takes over.
This animated short film On Departure depicts Eoin’s own personal journey which centers around the loss of his younger brother Emmet. The project was funded by the Irish Film Board’s Frameworks programme in conduction with The Arts Council (of Ireland) and RTE (Raidió Teilifís Éireann).
We are truly sorry for your loss.
